Exhibition Dates: April 5th to May 10th

Transits will consist of paintings on canvas in the gallery and paintings on vinyl hung on the chain link fences outside.
For his first show in Los Angeles in over three decades, David Humphrey poetically weaves together images derived from a variety of historic, vernacular and imagined sources. Locations and objects break apart and recombine to tell stories about the self in flux, about the way individuals are assemblages of what’s around them and what’s inside of them. His protagonists are in transit between states.
Things in a Humphrey painting are more than one thing and many things are happening at once. Operating like a meditation, thoughts and scenes float across the picture plane; a scribble is a person, a person is a wall. The artist is unafraid. Unconscious imagery collides with the real in formally inventive paintings that tangle the political and psychological with the social. Everything seeps into everything.

David Humphrey (b. 1955) has been the subject of 44 solo exhibitions including Fredericks & Freiser, NY: McKee Gallery, NY; Sikkema Jenkins, NY; Marcia Wood, Atlanta: Fredric Snitzer Gallery, Miami; and Contemporary Art Center, Cincinnati.
